~Bite sized Bible~ What’s your calling?

Have you ever met someone who just seems to have it all together? They seem to know exactly what they want, where their life is going and what they want to be.

When I was a teenager my sister was one of these people, she knew that she wanted to go to catering college and she knew she wanted a career in cooking somewhere and the ultimate dream was to own her own coffee shop, complete with free lollies on the counter for valued customers.

I on the other hand never had a clue. I chose my study subjects at school based on what I liked and the ones that had the least exams attached. I never wanted to go to university until the last minute when I decided I’d apply and defer a year, and even then I wasn’t sure I really wanted to go. I went to my uni open days wanting to do English Literature and Creative Writing and left signed up to a Journalism course!

I have often felt that I bounce around the place not really knowing what I’m doing, when and where but it all seems to fit in the end.

A year ago I would have told you that I didn’t know my calling at all. To be honest, I’d talked about finding what I was called to do with people and never really understood it.

So what is God calling us to? Is there such a thing as a calling?

Let’s start by looking at this word calling…

Ephesians 1:17-18 (NIV) says ‘I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you.’

I’d be a hypocrite if I said that I’d never been called to do anything, I mean lots of you have followed my journey and heard each testimony of what God has been doing in my life and essentially what he has called me to do. But I think i didn’t even realise what our calling as Christians actually meant until recently.

My idea of calling had always been listening out for opportunities to serve in a big way and see if that was what God was calling me to do little did I understand that in this I was living my life from one big event to the next and not necessarily embracing the in-between bits.

Paul writes to the Ephesians (a church plant post- Jesus death and resurrection) saying that he prayed they would get to know God better, when he talks about their eyes being enlightened he is saying he wants them to really have a relationship with God, to know him better and to learn about him so that they can understand their calling which is to bring others into a relationship with Jesus. To spread the message in their world and ours of the resurrection of Jesus, how he died as a sacrifice for our sins but rose again to new life, for love of us, so that we may have a true relationship with God.

So what is our calling? To live in the now, and share who Jesus is in the life you are living now, don’t wait for the next big adventure because your whole life is a BIG ADVENTURE! Your calling is to live it for his glory, in freedom and in love.
